“What’s your deepest, darkest fear?” isn’t exactly the type of question that qualifies as appropriate small talk. After all, people usually don’t like to openly discuss, or think about the things that keep them up at night.
However, if you really wanted to get to know someone, learning abut their phobias might actually teach you a lot of about their personality.
For example, people with Thalassophobia are scared of the ocean. The fear in itself is interesting, but what it says about the person who has it can be even deeper.
They might be scared of trying new things, the unknown, or even had a traumatizing experience that have them bad associations with deep water.
Other phobias can reveal interesting things about the sufferer’s personality too. In fact, many people have common fears of the same things.

1. Spiders

Arachnophobia, or the fear of spiders is an extremely common fear to have and it’s not hard to see why.
Psychology Today reports that up to 1 in 3 women share this fear. However, it is prevalent among men and people from plenty of different cultures and backgrounds too.
It is thought that people who fear spiders have an especially high disgust emotion. This emotional reaction is an evolutionary trait that helps us avoid contact with animals that are dangerous, or spread disease.
So, your fear of spiders might make you even more aware or highly evolved than some other people.
2. Snakes

Snakes are another creepy crawly creature that will send plenty of people running.
As you are probably aware, snakes are more or less always portrayed negatively throughout history, and even in the Bible.
According to Science Daily, a fear of snakes may stem from our exposure to snakes being evil in literature and pop culture.
Therefore, as someone who fears snakes, you might be well read, or have a higher memory retention than most people.
3. Heights
A fear of heights is another fear that many people share in different capacities.
Psychology Today suggests that the feeling of being disoriented or out of balance can be extremely disturbing, and being high up can activate these types of feelings.
Moreover, this reaction might also be related to having dreams about flying.
Flying dreams are associated with feeling elated and in control, but being at a high point in reality without the opportunity to escape (or fly) can trigger some very scary thoughts.
People who fear heights might be detailed-oriented perfectionists who hate losing control.
4. Flying

A fear of flying is similarly associated with a fear of heights, still it is slightly different.
It is widely known that it is far more dangerous to get in a car than it is a plane, but that doesn’t stop lots of people from sharing this fear.
Psychology Today explains that people with a fear of flying are very imaginative, and can’t discount the possibility of something going wrong unless it’s impossible.
5. Thunder And Lightning
We can all probably think of a time when the loud sound of thunder and a flash of lightning startled us.
This is a fear that many people grow out of. However, those who never do suffer from astraphobia. People who have it are predisposed to fear and anxiety, but are also known for being agreeable, kind souls.
If you’re afraid of thunderstorms, you’re probably a warm-hearted, maternal person with a tendency to worry.
6. Injections
Shots aren’t the type of thing that most people enjoy. However, most sit down in the doctor’s chair without much fuss because it helps your health in the long run.
If you’re one of the people who are irrationally afraid of needles and injections, you might just be more in touch with your inner cave person.
Getting a needled jabbed into us can remind us of stab wounds, something we are wired to be deathly afraid of, and with good reason!

7. Germs

Sometimes the things we don’t see are what scare us the most and germs are a great example of this scary unknown.
People who are especially concerned with germs and bacteria may share some obsessive compulsive traits.
On the bright side, you are definitely clean and organized, with deep-seated desire to keep everything in its place.
8. Crowds
Being afraid of large crowds is one facet of agoraphobia, a social anxiety disorder.
A large crowd of people, or place that is crowded like a mall or concert can be scary for anyone. If your fear prevents you from going places or doing certain things, it counts as a phobia.
People who suffer from a fear of crowds are usually also homebodies or introverts who would rather hang out alone or in small groups.
